Narcissistic Abuse Therapy in Birmingham: Healing from Emotional Manipulation with Expert Counseling
— What You Need to Know —
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens in the first session?
Our initial session focuses on building a strong therapeutic relationship and getting to know you. We'll discuss what brought you to therapy, your family background, current symptoms, and the goals you want to accomplish. I take time to understand your whole story, not just your current struggles. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you're feeling lost, overwhelmed, or like you don't recognize yourself anymore, therapy can help. Many of my clients describe feeling empty after giving everything to others, struggling with anxiety that controls their daily life, or dealing with depression that makes simple tasks feel impossible. If any of this sounds familiar, you deserve support.
Do you take insurance?
I operate as a private pay practice at $150 per hour. While I don't directly bill insurance companies, I can provide you with documentation for potential reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits. In certain circumstances, I do offer a sliding scale fee to make therapy more accessible.
How long does therapy usually take?
This varies for each person, but many women start feeling some relief within the first few sessions. Some clients work with me for a few months to navigate a specific crisis, while others choose longer-term support as they rebuild their identity and learn new patterns. We'll check in regularly about your progress and what feels right for you.
Can you really understand what I'm going through if you haven't experienced it yourself?
I grew up in a home affected by addiction and difficult relationships, and I've personally worked through codependency and trauma. My 30+ years as a therapist combines both professional training and life experience. I understand the complexity of feeling responsible for everyone else's happiness while losing yourself in the process.
What if I'm dealing with a chronic illness too?
Having worked with many clients managing autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, and other health conditions, I understand how exhausting it can be to cope with both physical and emotional challenges. I offer virtual sessions so you can attend therapy from home on difficult days, and we'll work at a pace that honors your energy levels.
What's the difference between depression and grief?
Both can feel similar, but grief usually follows a significant loss while depression can occur without a clear trigger. Many women experience both, especially after divorce or losing a loved one. In our work together, we'll explore what you're experiencing and develop appropriate support for your specific situation.
How do I know if I was in a narcissistic relationship?
Common signs include feeling like you constantly walked on eggshells, doubting your own memory or feelings, being isolated from friends and family, or feeling responsible for your partner's emotions. Many survivors describe feeling confused about what was real in the relationship. This is specialized work, and I have extensive training in helping women heal from this type of emotional abuse.
Still Have Questions?
Every woman's situation is unique, and you may have specific concerns that aren't covered here. I'm here to answer any questions about therapy, my approach, or whether we might be a good fit to work together. The free 15-minute consultation gives us both a chance to see if this feels right without any financial pressure.
I work with women throughout Alabama and offer both in-person sessions in Birmingham and virtual appointments for your convenience.
